Dental Care Without A Drill

What Is Air Abrasion Dentistry?

We have yet to treat a patient who enjoys having their teeth drilled. Air abrasion treatment is a technology that allows Dr. Holsteen to bypass using a drill. The tool functions like a mini sandblaster. It sprays out a fine stream of particles made of silica, aluminum oxide, or a baking soda mixture. Dr. Holsteen aims the stream at stained or decayed portions of your teeth and effectively sandblasts the decay away. The particles are suctioned out of your mouth with a thin tube.

Is Air Abrasion Dentistry Safe?

Yes, the treatment is completely safe. All that is required are protective eye wear that we’ll provide to you during your appointment and the use of a rubber dam. The rubber dental dam protects the teeth and gums that we’re not treating. Air abrasion therapy has been around for many years. One of the reasons that you might not have heard about it is because of the cost of the technology. Most dental practices don’t offer Air Abrasion because they’re unwilling to make the investment.

When Would Dr. Holsteen Recommend Air Abrasion?

Dr. Holsteen would use Air Abrasion for several reasons:

  • Prepping a cavity for a dental filling
  • Prepping a tooth for bonding or a sealant
  • Removing tooth decay
  • Removing old composites
  • Removing stains

There are many advantages. There is no need for anesthesia and you will not feel any sound, pressure or vibration. Dr. Holsteen can also treat multiple sites in your mouth in one visit. It also reduces the risk of chipping or fractures that can be caused with a drill.

For these reasons as well as patient’s fear of drills, Air Abrasion may be a great option for you. If this sounds interesting and you’d like to learn more about our Air Abrasion technology, give us a call at 719-598-3502 or send us an email to schedule a consultation.

Your comfort is our highest goal, which is why we offer this great alternative to dental drills.

I've been seeing Dr. Holsteen since 1992! The staff is wonderful! They are friendly and they talk to you! They are not robots! (Not to mention they play my favorite oldies station on Pandora when I go in!) I love these professionals because they make you feel at home!
