There are many adverse conditions that can happen in cases where our oral hygiene becomes neglected. We all know about things like tooth decay resulting from poor oral health care. However, this is not the only type of condition that can happen. Periodontal disease, along with tartar build-up, are also things patients should be aware of.

Periodontal disease begins as a bacterial infection inside of your gums. The infection will cause your gums to turn red and inflamed. If this infection isn’t treated, it will begin to destroy the bone structure surrounding and supporting your teeth. At this point, the teeth can begin to loosen, and even fall out, due to the lack of bone structure holding them in place.

Treatment of periodontal disease involves (but may not be limited to) a procedure known as scaling and root planing. During the scaling and planing procedure, Dr. Daniel Holsteen will clean the roots of the teeth, removing the biofilm, plaque, and bacteria that are causing the infection.

A re-doubling of daily oral care habits, such as brushing and flossing, is vital to helping the patient avoid another outbreak of periodontal disease.
