A new year is here and, for many, that means making New Year’s Resolutions. Might we suggest one that won’t be forgotten by Valentine’s Day? Resolve to get a whiter smile! At Mountain Shadows Family Dentistry, we have a lot of options to help you achieve your smile goals in 2018.

The first step is to make sure your dental hygiene habits are consistent and thorough. Are you brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, for two full minutes each session? This cleans plaque and debris away from your teeth, helping to prevent cavities and whitening teeth. Flossing is also important, as it cleans the areas of the mouth that your toothbrush cannot reach easily.
Next, visit your dentist for cleanings twice a year. Many people are satisfied with the white, polished look they get from following these simple practices. If you would like an even whiter look, read on!

There are several teeth whitening options available for you in our office. You may choose to schedule an in-house whitening treatment, for the fastest possible results. If speed is not an important factor, you can opt for take-home treatments in custom-made whitening trays, and whiten your teeth in the privacy of your own home.
Whitening toothpaste is also an option. It can be used on its own or after a whitening treatment, to keep your smile snowy white.

After you have completed your whitening treatment, try to reduce the amount of dark food and drinks you consume. This includes, but is not limited to, beer, dark sodas, wine, coffee, dark fruit juices, and beet juice. Artificial colors can also stain teeth. Drinking beverages through a straw may assist in reducing the effects of food and drinks that can “undo” your whitening efforts.
